Former High Point University Academic Coordinator and adjunct professor Dr. Akir Khan is the recipient of a Community Game Changer Award from the Community Foundation of Greater Greensboro.
Offered in partnership with the Greensboro Grasshoppers, the award recognizes people who have worked to make the local community a better place for all residents.
At HPU, Dr. Khan supports the academic, personal and social success of first-year students and helps connect them with the university’s resources and programs that promote student success. He also teaches courses in human relations and business.
“It’s an honor to be part of a university that provides leadership and service on critical initiatives for our community,” says Dr. Khan. “In order for our community to be successful, we need to embrace the growth mindset and invest in the ‘we’ model rather than the ‘me’ model. Providing leadership, inclusiveness and planting seeds of greatness will not only impact our community now, but for many years to come.”
Khan is the former chair of the Piedmont Interfaith Council and is involved in promoting interfaith dialogue within the community. He also serves as a community liaison to the Out of the Garden Project to raise awareness of the need for donations to support food deserts.
Previously, Dr. Khan was a program facilitator at the Center for Creative Leadership in Greensboro. He holds a bachelor’s degree in business administration from the University of North Carolina at Charlotte, a master’s degree in public affairs from the University of North Carolina at Greensboro, and is pursuing a doctorate in educational leadership at HPU. In 2014, he was selected for The Triad Business Journal’s “Forty Leaders Under 40."
The Community Foundation of Greater Greensboro will recognize Dr. Khan at the conclusion of the Greensboro Grasshoppers game on June 11 at NewBridge Bank Park.
